Lorton
A Brief History
Lorton lies at the northern end of Lorton Vale, a beautiful valley which runs from Cockermouth. On each side of Boon Beck bridge are buildings which used to be a linen mill but were later used by the Jennings familyas the beginnings of their brewery. The Yew Tree Hall, now the village hall, was once used as the brewery malt house. Jennings moved to Cockermouth at the end of the19th Century and their ales are still brewed there.
Walking Round Lorton
The village has a very popular school, 3 tennis courts, a very small useful shop for daily and weekly essentials, a church and a pub serving delicious bar meals. This is only 3/4 mile from Meadow Bank, so is within walking distance; and if you prefer, we can book a table for you on request.
There is a daily bus service running through the village to Keswick, the times will vary depending on the season. If you intend to use them, it ia best to confirm times with the local shop.
