The interesting town of Cockermouth is only 4 miles away and boasts the birthplace of the famous poet, William Wordsworth. Wordsworth House, his original birthplace, is open to the public. In Lorton village still stands the famous Yew which William wrote about in his books.
Jennings Brewery, which incidentally originated in Lorton, is open offering tours throughout the day giving the opportunity to sample the extensive range of beers and wines produced on site.
There are many unusual shops for you to browse including a good book shop and curiosity shops
The Sheep and Wool centre is very popular with daily demonstrations of sheep...and also hosting a restaurant and shop.
You can go on a tour underground at The Honister Slate Mine and see how the mine works, there is a shop and cafe also.
Lake Derwentwater in Keswick where you can take a cruise on the lake which stops off at various beauty spots.
Theatre by the Lake with its many excellent productions of both a professional and amateur nature.
For car enthusiasts there is the Cars of the Stars museum and Art Gallery, which hosts a selection of classical and famous cars dating throgh the ages.
Mirehouse at Bassenthwaite is a historic house with lovely grounds and gardens which is open to the public throughout the year.
Maryport hosts an Aquarium with a wide range of different species of fish and a small marina hosting many small and large boats.
Whitehaven is an interesting coastal town where a visit to the Rum Storyis a must to learn the history behind its famous rum port.
A little further a filed is Muncaster Castle, where certain parts of the house are open to the public, together with an Owl Centre with many species of Owls for you to see. Later you can take a stroll through the beautifully maintained gardens and grounds. A particularly beautiful time is in April and May when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom.
Fyrther down the road is the 'Laal Ratty' miniature railway which is always worth a visit and is something for the children to enjoy.
Depending on the season, there are other activities of interest available including visits from the Tall Ships to the coast, the very colourful and lively Victorian and Georgian festivals, the ever popular light 'switch on' in both Keswick and Cockermouth for the Christmas period. The Jazz festival at Maryport, and the beer festivals in Keswick and Cockermouth.
We are not too far from the famous border city of Carlisle with the historic Castle, Cathedral, Museum and shops etc. Hadrians Wall and the Scottish borders are a little further but still make both memorable and enjoyable days out for all the family.
